Is Weight Gain Inevitable during Menopause?

Menopause is a term used to describe the time one year AFTER you stop having periods. This usually happens around the age of 51, but can happen as early as 40. Earlier is rare, but it does happen. It could be as late or later than 55.

Weight Gain is one of the annoying factors that tend to happen during this time.

Women tend to gain weight during the years 35 - 55. They also have a harder time keeping weight off.

  • Estrogen levels decrease causing weight gain. Fat cells increase to take up the slack.
  • Usually our physical activity decreases. It's always good to continue an exercise program as we mature.
  • Genetics can sometime have a lot to do with weight gain. If Grandma Millie was round around the middle, you may be inclined to be too.
  • Our metabolism slows during this time, making our calorie need less.

If you find your clothes are fitting a bit snug, you may want to make some changes to your eating and exercising habits to balance your body's lessening caloric need.

Menopause does not have to trigger weight gain. Small changes can make big differences. If you remember the 2 E's - Eat Less and Exercise More and you will lessen your chances of gaining weight during menopause.
